June is the start of National Indigenous History Month. The Town of Okotoks is planning to commemorate the Tipi transfer that took place on June 3, 2023, and kick off
National Indigenous History Month with a “Tipi Camp” and the 2nd annual all- Indigenous Artisan Market.
The Camp will be set up in an area close to the Okotoks Recreation Centre (99 Okotoks Drive). Set up for the Camp will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, and take down will
begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Take part in our Tipi Camp
We are currently looking for Tipi Camp participants, so if you have a Tipi(s) and want to set it up during our tipi camp, you are more than welcome to join. There is no fee to participate and you do not have to be Indigenous to take part in the tipi camp. We encourage anyone with a Tipi to come and set up, especially Indigenous and Non-Indigenous organizations, municipalities, cities, etc. Each Tipi holder will receive a $250.00 honorarium for setting up. The first 30 Tipi’s will have a reserved spot, and any additional Tipi holders will be placed on a numbered waiting list.
What will the Town provide?
- Camp elder, on site;
- Camp crier, on site;
- A Camp kitchen with snacks and beverages only;
- Above ground fire pits and firewood. In-ground fires will not be permitted;
- Helpers to set up and take down the Tipi’s on Friday and Sunday; and
- Early afternoon and evening entertainment on Saturday, June 1.
The following amenities will also be available at the Okotoks Recreation Centre
(ORC):
- Changing rooms, washrooms and shower facilities (in the hockey dressing rooms).
No charge to campers; - Outdoor spaces that can be utilized such as the Splash Park, Skateboard Park and
walking paths, which lead to the downtown core. No charge to campers; and - A fitness gym, swimming pool and gymnasium. Daily admission rates apply.
Rules:
- Zero tolerance for alcohol or drug use in the Tipi Camp;
- Zero tolerance for disrespectful behaviour towards any Town staff and/or
volunteers; - Zero tolerance for disrespectful behaviour towards any participants; and
- You must have someone sleep in your Tipi over night.

The Town of Okotoks is not responsible for any damage(s) to personal property, including Tipi’s whether it be by vandalism or natural causes.
